This scene is based on a memorable experience early one morning in Africa. We visited a granite outcrop, which was the home of a pair of black eagles. As the sun warmed their perches on the higher rocks, upward air currents were generated. I have been charged quite often by lone bull elephants who were only bluffing. Although I never stood my ground to test them, I felt that their efforts were halfhearted bravado. Even as I departed, I have seen them stop in a swirl of dust, tossing their heads and swinging their trunks to put me in my place. - Robert Bateman
Canada geese, for me, are symbols of fidelity and territoriality. I see them as forceful, direct birds. In this painting I was thinking about the bond between the two and have shown the male on guard, watchful and alert, and the female on the nest. - Robert Bateman
These apples were growing on my favorite apple tree in Ontario. This is a unique tree producing fruit unlike any I have tasted - sweet, aromatic, crisp, juicy and almost lacking in sourness. It will remain forever wild with its unsprayed and blemished fruit. - Robert Bateman
The coyote, or brush wolf, is our North American wild dog. He is standing on an old glacial gravel ridge, among winter sagebrush. I enjoyed the austere colors and rich textures and forms. - Robert Bateman

The American Southwest is a region a stark mountains, arid grasslands and vast deserts, yet it harbors an amazing variety of plants and animals. Unfortunately, among the animals we can no longer find the Mexican wolf, el lobo, the smallest wolf subspecies, which formerly flourished from the southwestern United States to southern Mexico. As cattle ranching expanded, the Mexican wolf declined, poisoned or shot as a threat to livestock. Although a few wild members of this vanishing race may still survive in remote parts of Mexico, there have been no recent sightings. The survival of this subspecies will therefore depend on the successful release of captive-bred wolves into safe wilderness. - Robert Bateman

Summer in the arctic is wonderful. The days are long, and the plants and animals almost seem to be rushing to accomplish their activities before the coming of winter. After the long, dark winter out on the sea ice, the polar bears are able to come inland and enjoy a more varied diet. The winter food is almost entirely seals, but summertime brings small mammals, birds and eggs as well as a variety of plant life. It is an easy time for the bears. - Robert Bateman

"Some say that the cross fox, seen below, is so-named because it is a cross between a red fox and a black or silver fox, but a cross or black fox can occur any time in a litter of red foxes. Others say its name came from the dark area down the back and across the shoulders that forms the sign of a cross.
"Although all foxes are perky and elegant, this one was especially so, leading me to believe that it must be a female. I featured the luxuriant tail, a very important asset to all foxes. This one is graced with a superb and abundant appendage. The tail, when wrapped around a sleeping fox's face and paws, becomes a muff and comforter with great insulation properties, but is easy to breathe through" - Robert Bateman
I Designed this painting to play up the herd of wildebeest and to show that a few are keeping an eye on the lion. I deliberately painted the lion as subdued and almost transparent, partly as a reaction to the normal dramatic depiction and partly because lions do blend with the landscape. - Robert Bateman

Unlike most large predators, coyotes have adapted well to the human presence. Originally a western species, they have expanded their range north as far as the arctic, south as far as the northern part of South America, and east as far as New England. When I was a boy, there were no coyotes in the ravines of Toronto. Now, I gather, they are fairly common. They are seldom seen near human habitation, however, since they are alert, nimble, and usually quite shy. And though their habitat has expanded, coyotes seem most of all creatures of the open prairie, where their song - a series of sharp yelps followed by a high-pitched howl - often pierces the nocturnal stillness. - Robert Bateman

In this picture, I have shown the mallard drake as a birder often sees him, in a rather quiet, almost domestic scene. I have used back lighting and a color combination of flowers, grass and water to harmonize with the colors of the bird. While the hen is busy with the young, this mallard is taking a rest in the midst of a preening session. - Robert Bateman
