The Air, the Forest and the Watch was painted as a celebration of Earth Day.  My subjects, the atmosphere, the trees and the bald eagle, were chosen as symbols of issues that require our commitment to the preservation of our planet. - Robert Bateman
Safely stationed in an imposing rock crevice, the bobcat keeps watch over its territory.  Relying primarily on its senses of sight and hearing to pinpoint potential prey, the bobcat has chosen a sylvan spot on this mossy platform. - Robert Bateman
This scene is based on a memorable experience early one morning in Africa.  We visited a granite outcrop, which was the home of a pair of black eagles.  As the sun warmed their perches on the higher rocks, upward air currents were generated.  Soon the eagles took off, riding the thermals, and gave us a wonderful display of flying skills as they hunted for prey. - Robert Bateman
I have been charged quite often by lone bull elephants who were only bluffing.  Although I never stood my ground to test them, I felt that their efforts were halfhearted bravado.  Even as I departed, I have seen them stop in a swirl of dust, tossing their heads and swinging their trunks to put me in my place. - Robert Bateman
Canada geese, for me, are symbols of fidelity and territoriality.  I see them as forceful, direct birds.  In this painting I was thinking about the bond between the two and have shown the male on guard, watchful and alert, and the female on the nest. - Robert Bateman
These apples were growing on my favorite apple tree in Ontario.  This is a unique tree producing fruit unlike any I have tasted - sweet, aromatic, crisp, juicy and almost lacking in sourness.  It will remain forever wild with its unsprayed and blemished fruit. - Robert Bateman
The coyote, or brush wolf, is our North American wild dog. He is standing on an old glacial gravel ridge, among winter sagebrush. I enjoyed the austere colors and rich textures and forms. - Robert Bateman

The gyrfalcon is the king of the falcons and is much sought after by the falconers of the world.  In this painting, I wanted to indicate a lonely feeling, thus I have the bird looking a bit wistful at the bottom of a large misty place. - Robert Bateman

One of the very special things about elephants is their sense of family.  Elephant society is matriarchal and is generally ruled by one of the older and wiser cows.  In this painting, I wanted to show an unremarkable mother elephant facing a potential threat and her trusting calf at her side. - Robert Bateman

In this painting, I have shown a big male grizzly in a far from threatening mood.  Winter is coming; he is fat, contented and getting sleepy.  He has come down to the salmon river to look for a snack before curling up for hibernation. - Robert Bateman

The natural world is not the only thing that appeals to me as an artist.  I also enjoy manmade objects, particularly those, which have been affected by the forces of nature.  This fence post was a living growing white cedar, which, over the decades, has evolved an interesting surface of patterns and textures.  The humble burdock supplies a decorative aspect. - Robert Bateman

The great gray owl is truly a ghost of the north.  It is fleeting and silent.  Its wing feathers have downy edges, making its flight totally silent.  The colors are subdued, and the patterns provide excellent camouflage. - Robert Bateman
In this work, I wanted to show the diminutive quality of the bird by subordinating it to the blossoms. Although the images have a delicate, feminine look, I was also intrigued by the abstract power created by the shapes in the reflections. - Robert Bateman

If I see an osprey, I feel that this particular area must be an interesting place.  I very much enjoy the presence of water.  This, coupled with plentiful fish, is a good indication of osprey as well as other wildlife.  This painting is a study of a nest I saw in truly picturesque wilderness country - the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. - Robert Bateman

The mallard is perhaps the best known duck in the world.  It would seem that its population should prosper throughout its range, however, due to various factors, some of these populations are seriously declining.  Over-hunting and habitat reduction may be involved. - Robert Bateman
In this painting I wanted to show the ominous presence of a mature, lone wolf, I wanted to create a mood of seriousness and respect - not threat.  From the artistic point of view, I was intrigued by the challenge of portraying a black animal on an almost black background.  It is something like playing a whole piano composition in half an octave of the bass section. - Robert Bateman

Although the moose appears to be ungainly he is the tallest North American hoofed mammal and, in many ways, is very stately.  This moose has emerged onto a sandy spit in the early morning glow.  Fall is approaching, and this bull is perhaps looking for a mate or a rival. - Robert Bateman

In this painting, I wanted to convey a plummeting, unstable feeling.  I deliberately made one of the peregrine’s wings almost touch the frame so that the line of the frame adds force to the hawk’s dive.  The misty trees and little cloud at the bottom also hold things in without destroying the dynamic momentum of the painting. - Robert Bateman

Here we have a little one-grave pioneer cemetery.  No one now visits the grave except this magpie pair who, in their black-and-white garb and with their intelligent ingenuity, seem to me to represent the spirit of the pioneers. - Robert Bateman

The cape buffalo is a powerful and dangerous African mammal.  Often mistaken for the slovenly domestic water buffalo, the cape buffalo is more like a tough, Spanish fighting bull.  Here I have shown a mature bull in repose.  Something has startled him and his ever-present cattle egret companions - perhaps an approaching elephant or lion. - Robert Bateman

Its two American cousins, the trumpeter and whistling swans, are of the wild, remote areas.  The mute swan, on the other hand, is associated with soft landscapes of winding rivers and weeping willows or lush parks and grand estates.  This is the elegant swan of poetry and songs. - Robert Bateman

The American Southwest is a region a stark mountains, arid grasslands and vast deserts, yet it harbors an amazing variety of plants and animals.  Unfortunately, among the animals we can no longer find the Mexican wolf, el lobo, the smallest wolf subspecies, which formerly flourished from the southwestern United States to southern Mexico.  As cattle ranching expanded, the Mexican wolf declined, poisoned or shot as a threat to livestock.  Although a few wild members of this vanishing race may still survive in remote parts of Mexico, there have been no recent sightings.  The survival of this subspecies will therefore depend on the successful release of captive-bred wolves into safe wilderness. - Robert Bateman

I consider Vigilance my most important bald eagle painting. It has the most dramatic qualities, which is appropriate for what may be the most dramatic bird in North America. Every day, the bald eagle must be vigilant to survive. We too must be vigilant, every day, to protect. - Robert Bateman

This mouse is a fully mature adult in his two-tone brown and white. He is where he belongs, in the woods.  The entrance to one of his burrows is graced with a clump of fragrant wintergreen. - Robert Bateman
This painting presented a challenge.  In order to make the animal stand out, the logical place to put it would have been in front of the dark vegetation, but I thought it would be more interesting to paint the hare as nature had intended it - white on white.

Summer in the arctic is wonderful. The days are long, and the plants and animals almost seem to be rushing to accomplish their activities before the coming of winter. After the long, dark winter out on the sea ice, the polar bears are able to come inland and enjoy a more varied diet. The winter food is almost entirely seals, but summertime brings small mammals, birds and eggs as well as a variety of plant life. It is an easy time for the bears. - Robert Bateman

ABOVE THE RAPIDS - GRIZZLY AND GULLS
"Salmon are an essential element for nourishment of wildlife from grizzly bears to birds to other aquatic life and insects.  Moreover, scientists have just discovered that the nutrient makes its way through bears, birds and insects to fertilize the giant west coast lowland forest.  Salmon rivers have much bigger trees than non-salmon rivers.  This fish is so important and integral to society and nature that many people think it should be the poster creature for the Endangered Species Act instead of the spotted owl."

"Although I have not shown a salmon in this painting, you know that they are there.  Some are in the quiet water above the falls and others are still fighting their way upstream.   This is why the grizzly bear and gulls are there.  This is the banquet time so important to these species and many others.  It is a far-ranging crime against nature and against us to jeopardize the spectacular wild salmon."  - Robert Bateman

"Some say that the cross fox, seen below, is so-named because it is a cross between a red fox and a black or silver fox, but a cross or black fox can occur any time in a litter of red foxes. Others say its name came from the dark area down the back and across the shoulders that forms the sign of a cross.
"Although all foxes are perky and elegant, this one was especially so, leading me to believe that it must be a female. I featured the luxuriant tail, a very important asset to all foxes. This one is graced with a superb and abundant appendage. The tail, when wrapped around a sleeping fox's face and paws, becomes a muff and comforter with great insulation properties, but is easy to breathe through" - Robert Bateman

I Designed this painting to play up the herd of wildebeest and to show that a few are keeping an eye on the lion. I deliberately painted the lion as subdued and almost transparent, partly as a reaction to the normal dramatic depiction and partly because lions do blend with the landscape. - Robert Bateman

Unlike most large predators, coyotes have adapted well to the human presence. Originally a western species, they have expanded their range north as far as the arctic, south as far as the northern part of South America, and east as far as New England. When I was a boy, there were no coyotes in the ravines of Toronto. Now, I gather, they are fairly common. They are seldom seen near human habitation, however, since they are alert, nimble, and usually quite shy. And though their habitat has expanded, coyotes seem most of all creatures of the open prairie, where their song - a series of sharp yelps followed by a high-pitched howl - often pierces the nocturnal stillness. - Robert Bateman

In this picture, I have shown the mallard drake as a birder often sees him, in a rather quiet, almost domestic scene. I have used back lighting and a color combination of flowers, grass and water to harmonize with the colors of the bird. While the hen is busy with the young, this mallard is taking a rest in the midst of a preening session. - Robert Bateman
